Plans to create 82 new homes as part of a major redevelopment in Sunderland have been given the green light.

The move will see north east house builder Avant Homes deliver a mix of two, three and four-bedroom family homes and a range of detached and semi-detached properties on a section of land behind the cleared Seaburn Centre site.

These will each have a garage, car parking and dedicated gardens as part of a residential development of a key strategic city centre site.

The residential development will also ensure prospective first-time buyers and families have access to a more readily available supply of quality and accessible housing on Wearside.

Avant has been working with residents over the last 12 months to gauge local views on the plans, which included the aim of preserving and improving green spaces on and around the site.

The news is the culmination of 12 months of negotiations between the local authority and Hedley Planning Services.

Working with the developers and council planning officers, the firm has helped to achieve a revised planning application through the local approval process.

Director Joe Ridgeon said that it’s a big step forward in delivering much-needed family homes: “Working closely with the planning authority and the developers from the outset has been invaluable in securing planning approval.

“As planners, we want to see the creation of exciting and rewarding housing schemes that leave a long-lasting legacy. This one will undoubtedly see a real positive change to this part of Sunderland.”
